Reflections of AED 200

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met?

I expected to learn about the different art styles and cultures that claim them. I also expected tons of art projects. My expectations were met.

2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your intial posting?

I still agree with my initial posting. Art is the way a person, group or object is expressed. Art is unique and serves a lot of meaning.

3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so?

My favorite artist is still Leonardo DaVinci. After taking the course I am open minded to a lot more now. Along the course of the class I can say I started to fall towards Vincent Van Gogh.

4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different?

I still feel the same about online courses. I enjoy them.

The videos relate to the Art Exhibition project. They both include some of the things we see daily.

3.    What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?

For the most part I enjoyed the films. They added depth to my understanding of the artistic concepts. At times the videos got a little dull, I wasn’t 100% glued into the films at times.

1.       Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

Andy Warhol- Images of an Image and Uncertainty: Modern and Art. I don’t have too much of a background on either topic. I have heard a lot about Andy Warhol and wanted to see his work for myself.

2.       For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Images of an image:

·         Andy’s style was focused on pop art

·         Used a silk screen machine often

·         Used a silk screen machine to create an image of Marilyn Monroe

·         Created Ten Lizes in 1963

3.       How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos did a good job with giving a general explanation. Any time I don’t understand something I can always go back and re read the chapter. Expresionism, pop art and abstract art are all mentioned in the readings.

4.       What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

I enjoyed the films. They had a lot of info on expressionism and pop art. It was a nice refre

Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I decided to watch the videos on expressionism and cubism both to expand my knowledge on the topics since I’m not too familiar with them.

Expressionism:

·         Used in various paintings

·         Colors are used quite frequently to express the mood of the art

·         Can give a deeper understanding than art could, previously.

·         Uses symbols

Cubism:

·         Picasso lead the movement and impacted other artists

·         Representation of shapes and forms

·         Includes contrasts of lines, textures and colors

 How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos helped me understand the text further. The reading did a good job exploiting expressionism. I was able to further understand the meaning behind cubism and expressionism after reading the text.

 What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

I enjoyed both films. I understood the videos more than I did the readings. They weren’t too dull. They both were very good educational films.

Module 10

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I chose to watch the video on African Art because I wanted to learn more about the different artistic forms that contribute to African art. I also choose to watch the video on Hinduism.  I chose this video simply because I don’t have too much of a background on it and wanted to know more about it.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

In the African Art video I learned that they express their artistic nature in the form of music, masks, hairstyles and so on. Art is a big part of the African culture and is obvious in its various forms. African masks were made from straw and wood. Other African art (ceremonial) are created with more durable materials. The video on Hinduism was very informational. The Great Rivers Ganges was a powerful symbol of Hinduism. People of the Hindu religion believe in millions of years of life, death, and rebirth. Hindu’s host ceremonies where they pray, these ceremonies are for the “removal of pain.”

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos relate to the readings because they both express the differnt forms of art that each culture holds. It also relates to the text because it gives a history report on the forms of art. The readings just backed up the films and gave a deeper understanding.

Module 6

After watching the film, Through the Eyes of The Sculptor, I took in a few things. There is a lot that goes into being a sculptor. Patience is one. The amount of time that goes into sculpting a material seems so tiring. Also sculptors have to be determinated to finish the works of art that they constantly face. In the film it stated that Emanuel keeps his mind fresh by working on multiple projects. This scheme gives him a fresh eye every time he goes back to the material to enhance his previous work. The second film, Glass and ceramics, I learned that glass is made from sand. I knew it had something to do with heating a material up but I never knew it was sand! I also learned about the different types of glass and how it can be made into pretty much anything.

Both videos relate to the reading by giving an even deeper understanding of sculptures, glass and ceramics. The book goes into more detail on the history of sculptures and ceramics. The book was good at showing the different materials, elements and textures that are used. The videos gives more of a visual representation of the reading, showing the final processes of sculpting.  

I learned a lot from the films. I like how the reading gives the breakdown of sculptures and glass and ceramics and the videos just puts the icing on the cake by answering any other questions you may have. Along with a real time visual rather than just photos.

Describe Color and its effects on emotions.

 Color is how we see light as it is reflected off a surface. These reflections can change a person mood from being upset or furious to relax and a calm mood. For example, red is usually associated with anger and aggression. The color blue has more of a soothing effect on us mentally. On the other side, dark colors usually are associated with “evil” or “danger” compared to light colors that essentially gives more of an uplifting, happy vibe.

What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you?

 It is amazing how color can affect a person so much. There are so many values and shades that can be created from just one color by combining it with others. Another thing that fascinates me is how each emotion can be expressed by a color. Art work can have such deep meanings behind what the eye can see.

 In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and its effects on emotions?

What stood out to me the most was how artists made their colors. I would have never known the amount of time and work put into making a color. I also learned that most of the time, artists don’t come into a new piece with a set color way that they are going to use.

 In the Feelings video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and its effects on emotions?

 What had the biggest impact on me was the explanation of the Mona Lisa painting and its relevance. The meanings behind the artwork has such volume.

·         Platos: “manifestation of something beautiful attracts the person who sees it,” identified with Aros.

·         Ideas on beauty didn’t take into account the role of art in Aesthetics.

·         Joe Adison’s pleasures of imagination marked the beginning of modern aesthetic theory.

·         Frank Hutchinson’s inquiry concerning beauty, order, harmony, and design is the first systematic philosophical treatment of Aesthetics.

Which philosopher's theroy on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosphers name, era (time in history), and contribution to the aesthetic theory in your response.

Frank Hutchinson’s (1891-1945) theory on aesthetics stuck with me the most. His inquiry concerning beauty, order, harmony and design was the first systematic philosophical treatment of the subject of aesthetics. I feel like since his ideas were brought about early on, others based their theories off of Hutchinson’s and added their own twist.

 What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture? 

Both Chanqeux and Ramachandran provided supportive material to back their claims. They both provided some coherent evidence as to why humans feel the way they do about art. Ramachandran tied everything together when he said that science and art meet in the brain. This goes to how peoples various feelings come about.

How do the videos and article relate to the readings in the text?

The videos were good for getting the idea of aesthetics down and the reading helped me understand aesthetics more and answer my own questions about its development. The reading gave pretty much the same general definition of aesthetics as the video, the video game more of the history of it and its contributors, like Frank Hutchinson and Alexander Baumgarten.

First Blog

1. The process was pretty simple to me, I already had an available email to use and it didnt take any time to set up the blog.

2. I expect to learn the various art styles and techniques, not so much to master them, but more so to just get a feel for them and a little background history on them.

3. I have taken several online classes and I can honestly say I am very comfortable with them and the work load.

4. I feel like I can Relate most to the point that was brought up about failing at what you care for the most and losing sleep with trying to balance a fulltime academic schedule and working a part time job. Being in my 3rd year here, I had to accept the fact that I am going to lose sleep at times where the workload is heavy.
